If you suspect that you have an issue with your drainpipes but you’ve been putting off investigating it for fear that it will be costly and disruptive, now is the time to talk to Drain and Sewer Services because we’ve got a solution that may surprise you
What is drain relining?
In our blog we’ve spoken previously about the options available if your drains need repairing because leaving a damaged or broken drain in a state of disrepair is likely to lead to worse problems down the line, including flooding, damage to your property and even environmental pollution.
Sometimes, relaying drain pipes may be the best option, but in many cases you may simply be able to reline the damaged pipe. This is where a highly durable inner lining is used to fix a range of issues such as radial cracks caused by blockages, leaking joints, tree root damage or cracks from ground movement.
How does it work?
The first step is to inspect the damage pipes to understand what and where the issue is. This can be achieved through a CCTV survey rather than by digging up a whole road to find the issue.
Once the inspection is complete and a plan of action decided upon for addressing the issue, the pipe will be prepared for lining, which means clearing debris and as much residue as possible.
The prepared lining is then inserted onto the pipe and an airbag is inflated inside the lining to push it to the full width of the pipe. The lining then bonds itself to the old pipe and is left to cure and harden.
The airbag is then deflated and removed and a final inspection completed to make sure the pipe damage is effectively repaired.
This process can work from pipes as narrow as 50cm to those over a metre in diameter and the repair can be carried out just to the area needed, so there’s no need to replace the entire pipe.
What are the advantages of relining?
Drainpipe relining is a popular solution offering several advantages:
- It’s a quick repair solution
- New lining will have a low friction surface that aids water flow
- It’s a fully effective solution as pipe bends can be easily negotiated, so all the pipe is fully lined
- Lifespan of a pipe is increased by many years due to the durability of the lining
- Causes less disruption as fewer machines and no excavation is needed, so there’s no need to close your business
- Reduces the cost of repair
