With a build-up of vegetation over the summer months and dry soils drifting into drainage systems, now is a good time to be checking your culverts and silt traps.

What do silt traps and culvert lines do?

Culvert lines and silt traps have important jobs aiding the free flow of water. A culvert is a tunnel that allows water to flow under structures such as roads, railways or bridges. A silt trap collects silt and unwanted sediment at the bottom of a sump, allowing water without sediment to continue to flow, preventing build-up down the line.

Why do silt traps and culvert lines need cleaning?

Without regular maintenance, culverts become blocked by fallen leaves and branches. At this time of year, fast growing weeds and grass can also quickly become a problem. In silt traps deposited silt builds up, preventing water flow and leading to blockages.

In both situations, when water can’t flow properly it leads to flooding and damage to nearby infrastructure or it can disrupt access and normal activity in the surrounding area. A build-up of silt and debris can also make it harder to spot damage in your drainage system, potentially leading to greater problems and repair costs in the future.

Fast and efficient cleaning

Speedy action is critical when you have drainage problems to prevent damage and costs escalating, so our experienced teams and equipment are on standby 24 hours a day.

Our tankers are equipped with suction and jetting units to clear away debris and standing water, even where access is difficult. Recently, the newest additions to our fleet, Bumblebee and Minibee, were in action together cleaning culverts; no job is too big or small.

To support both domestic and commercial clients, we work with other agencies which may also need to be onsite, in a way that minimises disruption to your wider operation.
