The news is full of the catastrophic flooding that hit many parts of Europe last week. No drainage systems could cope with the sheer amount of rain that fell, but the event highlights the increasing likelihood of extreme flooding and the importance of being prepared.

The UK is far from immune. On Sunday 4th July Edinburgh experienced nearly half its average July rainfall in less than an hour, causing serious disruption. Businesses and homes were under water, roads blocked and train services partially suspended.

It should no longer be surprising to see pictures like these during the summer months but, as we discussed in our post Check the drains to beat summer flooding, recent flooding is a sad reminder that it doesn’t just happen in the winter.

During the summer months, rapid vegetation growth quickly blocks or damages drains and sewers, preventing water from escaping quickly enough. In addition, the ground dries to a hard surface, letting rainwater flow rapidly over it to inundate drainage systems. When drainage and sewer systems aren’t properly maintained, they can’t cope with the influx.

Regularly maintaining drains is important throughout the year. Regularly removing vegetation, silt and trapped objects and repairing damage as it occurs are important for preventing the disruption, cost and heartache caused by flooding.

Our teams are out daily, completing drain and sewer work at commercial sites, businesses and residential properties. We can quickly assess what needs to be done and do it with minimal disruption.

In times of emergency, our teams are available 24/7 with our own trucks to remove flood water and ensure water drainage systems are left functioning.  We are also NRSWA Streetworks accredited , so you can be assured that road surfaces will be returned to their pre-flood states and all work is carried out with the highest regard to health and safety.
