Cesspit or septic tank, what’s the difference?

Do you know your cesspit from your septic tanks? They work differently, but both perform a similar task and they both require routine maintenance to work optimally.

So, what is a cesspit?

A cesspit is a tank sealed underground, with a manhole cover for access, that collects wastewater and sewage and stores it until emptied.

And a septic tank?

A septic tank also collects wastewater and sewage but completes a simple treatment process of the waste in the tank. Wastewater enters one tank where the solids settle to the bottom and begin to decompose. The liquid then flows to a second chamber from which the treated water is allowed to drain into a soakaway or nearby waterway.

How do you care for cesspits and septic tanks?

Both cesspits and septic tanks allow businesses and households not connected to the main sewage system to dispose of their wastewater and sewage effectively, but owners need to be mindful of their obligation to ensure that their tanks can function properly.

Both need regular cleaning and maintenance checks to ensure that damage, overflowing or leaks don’t cause harm to the adjacent environment and lead to a fine for the owner.

How often tanks need to be cleaned depends on their size and frequency of use. Maintenance involves cleaning the pipes of the tanks with jets of water and checking that the soakaway is in good condition and not cracked or leaking.
