What do we mean by “silt”? 
Silt is usually a mixture of materials, such as sand, dirt gravel, etc. that’s washed off surfaces such as roads and pavements by rain and into sewer pipes and drains.
This heavy material tends to settle to the bottom of the drain and sewer pipes where it collects and remains. If it isn’t routinely removed, then over time it hardens and causes a blockage. This then affects the ability of water to flow freely through the system, which can have significant consequences and lead to flooding and further damage.
