If you haven’t heard of sewer desilting and drain desilting, you need to read on in order to ensure that the sewer pipes and drain pipes in your domestic or commercial property aren’t at risk from the damage that silt can cause.

What do we mean by “silt”?

Silt is usually a mixture of materials, such as sand, dirt gravel, etc. that’s washed off surfaces such as roads and pavements by rain and into sewer pipes and drains.

This heavy material tends to settle to the bottom of the drain and sewer pipes where it collects and remains. If it isn’t routinely removed, then over time it hardens and causes a blockage. This then affects the ability of water to flow freely through the system, which can have significant consequences and lead to flooding and further damage.

What is drain and sewer desilting?

Sewer desilting and drain desilting are exactly as their names suggest. They refer to the important job of removing the loose and hardened silt from sewers and drain pipes to ensure the efficient passage of water through the system.

How will you know if your drain and sewer pipes need desilting?

There are several signs that tell you if you have problems with water draining away in the system serving your property, whether it’s caused by a build-up of silt or for some other reason. The signs that you should get your drains and sewers checked include:

  • Pooling water in your garden, on the street outside, carpark, drive etc.
  • Water draining slowly from showers, sinks and baths
  • Gurgling plug holes
  • Unpleasant smells

How do Drain and Sewer Services desilt your sewers and drains?

We are experts in drain cleaning and sewer cleaning with all the necessary specialist equipment to remove silt safely and efficiently from your drains and sewers.

Our specialist on-site team starts with a CCTV inspection accurately identifying the extent of the silt build-up and its location. Using one of our high-pressure water jet units (and we have some of the most powerful and versatile truck mounted units on the market) we then break down any harden silt and flush it, along with the loose silt, to the next extraction point in the sewer system. Jet vacuuming then forces the silt into our tanker where it can safely be disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations and the law.

Sewer cleaning and drain cleaning can be carried out as a one-off job, as a 24-hour emergency service callout or as part of a pre-planned drain and sewer maintenance contract.

The efficient removal of water through your drain and sewer network becomes increasingly important as we see levels of rainfall increase throughout the year.

To prevent this extra rainfall from causing flooding, the water must flow freely away through unobstructed pipes, making regular desilting and drainage system cleaning essential.
