At Christmas we will be thinking more about who’s coming down the chimney rather than what we are putting down our sinks.

But unless you want a blocked drain or sewer disrupting your seasonal festivities, there are some Christmas goodies that shouldn’t be put down the sink.

Don’t feed the sink this festive season

While enjoying a Christmas meal with friends and family is a highlight for most people, the leftovers can take their toll on drains and sewers.

The types of food associated with a traditional Christmas dinner – turkey, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, gravy and lots of the baking we do over Christmas – often contain a lot of fats, oil and grease.

When organic liquids like these are poured down the sink they solidify in the pipes, preventing other liquids from moving freely through the drainage system and these will eventually back up. If left for a while, the blockage causes unpleasant smells and flooding.

Preventing blockages

Running hot soapy water down the sink after tipping fats down it won’t help because fat solidifies very quickly when it cools and it builds up quickly to cause a blockage.

Avoid tipping fats, oil and grease down your sink by wiping greasy pans with kitchen roll and putting it in the bin. If there’s a lot of fat, let it solidify first then and put it in the bin.

The unwanted gift of a blocked drain

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a blocked drain over the festive period, our 24 hour emergency service at Drain and Sewer Services will be on standby to help.

We may not turn up on your roof in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, but if your drain gets blocked during the holidays, our distinctive yellow trucks and specialist team will be an equally welcome sight outside your front door.
