When we received an emergency call from clients on a large business park in Hampshire recently to fix a burst water main, our team was quick to act so that business could continue as normal.
What causes burst water mains?
Burst water mains can cause havoc. Residents losing water supplies to homes, sink holes forming, roads closures and businesses shutting are all potential consequences and unfortunately, burst water mains are not rare events. They can be caused in a number of ways:
- Excavations: Contractors or homeowners carrying out excavations work can accidently damage pipes
- Old pipes: Often made of cast iron, which corrodes and isn’t as durable as modern materials
- Tree roots: Invasive roots can cause damage as they grow and spread
- Temperature change: Causes pipes to expand, contract and eventually crack
- Poor installation: When not laid or fitted properly, pipes can break when they shift
- Corrosive soils: Some acidic soils can corrode pipes over time if made of older materials
- Water pressure: Increases can put pipes under pressure, exposing weaknesses in walls and joints
Low water flow, pooling of water and sunken areas near a property can all be indicators of a burst water main and should be investigated to prevent worse damage which can lead to major disruption in your life or operations.
